Food There are quite a few different proven diets out there for sugar gliders. They all consist of a protein source and good calcium to phosphorus ratios. While you don’t need to be a scientist and understand it all you do need to realize that they require protein and fresh (or frozen) fruits and veggies daily with a higher calcium then phosphorus ratio. Most of the proven diets out there have taken this into consideration and have balanced their meals properly. This is why it is so important to feed an approved diet. I do suggest you read the diet links I provided to find out more and see what diet appeals to you the most. I started my gliders on BML but now I feed The Pet Glider Exotic Diet also known as Priscilla Price’s diet (she’s the one who developed it) It’s not nearly as easy as some of the others but I think that variety for them is key and so I do the extra work involved to feed them what I believe is a good diet. Once you’ve seen what’s out there come back to me with whatever questions you might have and I’ll do some comparisons for you on why I feed what I do.

Stuff gliders need to stay away from
Nuts, Chocolate, dairy products (except yogurt), Onion, Garlic, Cat nip is TOXIC and can KILL THEM!!! Pretty much anything that is not healthy is not a good idea. You can always find a treat they will love that is also good for them. Flavored yogurts and applesauces, mealies, frozen yogurt drops, dried fruits (watch for added sugars or any thing else) I buy mine from the Sugar Glider Vendors found on Glider Central.
Suggies are NOT stinky, lol. While they do have scent glands and like to mark with them, the smell is barely noticeable. Now I do have a male breeding who likes to mark everything as much as he possibly can and when you get right into the cage you can smell it but even with both cages in my living room there is generally no smell noticeably what so ever. Intact males will generally mark more then others especially if they are with a breeding female. My other cage is 2 females and an intact male and there is no smell at all.

Self Mutilation
Very Important must read http://www.glidercentral.net/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/ubb/showflat/Number/69788#Post69788 Please be prepared for the worst and have an e-collar on hand before you need it. You can purchase them here from The Glider Initiative TGI- The Glider Initiative http://www.thegliderinitiative.org/shop/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=3
CAGES
Galvanized metal is an absolute NO NO. Very dangerous for gliders as they can develop UTI (urinary tract infections) from rubbing on the metal. They rub continuously on their cages to scent them so it needs to be a safe material. Bird cages generally have too large of a spacing between the bars as you can not go larger then a ½ inch or they will escape. Also for them to be large enough (at least 3’x2’x2’) you end up paying a fortune. Suitable cages are near impossible to find in Canada for a decent price so there are 2 routes that most of us go.
Reptaruim- this is what I use for mine after a few tries with different cages. Definitely the best way to go as long as you know your gliders aren’t going to try and chew their way through it. My joeys are all raised in them so it should not be an issue with a baby from me. They are a snap to wash, just pull them off the frame and toss in the washing machine or soak in the tub. You can buy a kit with the frame in it about $100 and although it is a little flimsy they do still work. Or you can buy just a cover and build the frame yourself from PVC piping. It is a little more expensive this way but tough as can be and you can make the frame to suit you for shelves, wheels and extra bars. In most cases you will have to order them online. The largest one (6’x2.5’x2.5’). We do occasionally have them to offer for sale to our joeys parents.

Alternate Cages
Vinyl Shelf Caging Instruction http://babylovegliders.com/stepbystepcage.html
Vinyl Shelving Cage These shelves can be found at Home Depot and other hardware stores and run about $23 a shelf, average large cage is going to run you about $200 or more. You can make them as large or small as you want, they are perfectly safe and easy (although not as easy as a rept) to clean. This site http://babylovegliders.com/stepbystepcage.html has a perfect step by step for making them and you can alter it as you wish.
Wheels This is an absolute MUST HAVE in any glider cage! Most Pet Store models are not suitable for gliders and your best bet is to order online from a safe sugar glider wheel producer. There are a few that make them and they can be found here. TGI- The Glider Initiative is an excellent source for medical kits, e-collars and wheels http://www.thegliderinitiative.org/shop/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=4
The Stealth Wheel is the premier Sugar Glider wheel and has been in use for many years, they now have different varieties available
